Spoks adds UTM parameters to every tracked link in your emails and SMS messages. You do not need to add them yourself, but you can if you want your own values.

How it works

Every link you add to an email or SMS is replaced with a branded tracking link on your domain, for example link.yourstore.com/abc1234. When a recipient clicks it, Spoks records the click and redirects them to your original URL with UTM parameters added. The branded link and the UTMs are not alternatives. The branded link handles click tracking inside Spoks, and the UTMs let GA4, Shopify and other analytics tools attribute the visit to your campaign.

Your original URL is kept intact. Any query parameters or #anchor you added are passed through unchanged.

utm_campaign

The email subject. If there is no subject, the first 30 characters of the post text, otherwise your store name

utm_content

The type of element the link was in, see below

utm_content values: button for buttons, forms and polls, image for images, videos and carousels, text for links inside text, product for product blocks, checkout for abandoned cart links, header for logo and announcement bar links, footer for footer links, social for social media icons.

Spoks also adds two parameters of its own, _spkscid and _spksv. These are used for revenue attribution in Spoks analytics and can be ignored in other tools.

Links that are not web addresses, such as mailto:, tel: and sms: links, are left untouched.

Adding your own UTMs

You can add utm_source, utm_campaign and utm_content directly to a destination URL. If a parameter is already present, Spoks keeps your value and does not overwrite it.

Do not add utm_medium. Spoks always adds it at click time, and a URL with two utm_medium values can be read differently by different analytics tools.

Checking what your store receives

Send yourself a test message, click a link, and look at the address bar on your store. You should see your original URL followed by the UTM parameters listed above. If those parameters are present but your analytics still show the visit as Direct, the cause is on the store or analytics side, for example a redirect on the store that drops query parameters.
