Spoks MCP reference

Full reference for Spoks MCP: connecting each client, every tool your AI assistant can use once connected, what to ask it, rate limits and security.

Written by Alva Dahl

This is the full reference for Spoks MCP. It describes what your own AI assistant can do once you have connected it to your store using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Everything on this page describes tools that run inside your AI assistant, on your own machine or account. None of it describes something the Spoks app does on its own, and none of it is something the Spoks support chat can run for you.

Using Claude? Spoks is listed in the Claude Directory, so you can connect in one click: open claude.ai/directory/spoks and click Connect.

New to Spoks? Install Spoks free from the Shopify App Store, sync your store, and come back here to connect it to your AI assistant. For what Spoks costs, see Pricing and the 1,000-contact free plan.

What is Spoks MCP?

Spoks MCP is Spoks' hosted MCP server. It gives an AI assistant you have connected yourself secure access to your store, including campaigns, flows, contacts, segments, forms, media, products and discounts. It works with assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT and others.

Why use Spoks MCP?

  • Easy setup: Connect through OAuth by logging in with your Spoks account; there are no keys to manage.

  • Natural-language marketing: Draft campaigns, build audiences and read results in conversation instead of clicking through the app.

  • On-brand by default: Your assistant can read your store's branding and recent campaigns so the copy it drafts matches your voice.

  • Ecommerce-aware: Pull in real Shopify products and discount codes so content references actual prices, images and offers.

  • Safe by design: The MCP is read-mostly. The only changes it can make are draft campaigns, inactive flows, segments, media uploads and store settings. Settings changes need settings access and your confirmation before anything is saved. It can't send, schedule, activate flows, edit contacts or delete anything.

  • Works within your access: It connects as you and respects what your role allows.

What can you do with Spoks MCP?

  • Draft campaigns: Create and edit draft emails and SMS, update individual content blocks, and get a link to open the draft in the editor.

  • Target the right audience: Search contacts, look up a single contact's profile and activity, preview a filter's reach, and create or update saved segments.

  • Build and manage your flows: Create automated flows from proven blueprints, add and adjust steps, and edit the emails and SMS inside them.

  • Read results: Look up the delivery and performance figures Spoks already recorded for campaigns you have sent.

  • Reuse your content: Search your media library and upload new images, and find signup forms and polls to drop into content.

  • Bring in your store: Search Shopify products and discounts to feature real items and offers.

What your AI assistant can and cannot do

It can: draft campaigns and edit drafts, create and edit inactive flows, create and update segments, upload media, change store settings once you confirm, search your products and discounts, and read the results of campaigns you have already sent.

It cannot: send or schedule campaigns, activate flows, turn on send steps in a flow, edit contact records, or delete anything. Campaigns and flows it creates land in Spoks as drafts or inactive flows. You review, then you send or activate, from the web app or the Spoks mobile app.

Getting started

Connecting takes a couple of minutes, and you only do it once per AI client.

Prerequisites

Before connecting Spoks MCP, make sure you have:

  1. An active Spoks store. Don't have one yet? Install Spoks free from the Shopify App Store.

  2. An MCP-compatible AI client such as Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT or Cursor.

Connecting to Spoks MCP

Add Spoks as a remote MCP server in your AI client using this endpoint:

https://mcp.spoks.com/mcp

You authenticate with OAuth by logging in with your existing Spoks account; there are no keys to manage, and access follows your account.

Steps to connect can differ between clients, but here are a few examples:

For Claude (Claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and the Claude mobile apps):

  1. Open claude.ai/directory/spoks and click Connect. You can also find Spoks by opening Customize → Connectors in Claude and searching for "Spoks".

  2. Log in with your Spoks account when prompted and approve access for Claude.

  3. Start a new chat and ask Claude to confirm it is connected to your store.

Prefer to add it manually? Open Customize → Connectors → Add custom connector, name it "Spoks", paste https://mcp.spoks.com/mcp, and complete the Spoks login.

For ChatGPT:

Requires Plus or higher. On a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, only a workspace admin or owner can turn on developer mode. If you don't see it, ask your workspace admin.

  1. Navigate to Settings → Security and login.

  2. Toggle Developer mode on.

  3. Open Plugins / Browse plugins and click + or Add in the top right corner. Select Create App / Create MCP App.

  4. Name it "Spoks" and paste https://mcp.spoks.com/mcp.

  5. Choose OAuth, check I understand and want to continue.

  6. Click Create and then Sign in with Spoks.

Others: Add https://mcp.spoks.com/mcp as a remote MCP server and complete the OAuth authentication when prompted.

Telling your assistant which store to work in

Your assistant works in one store at a time. At the start of a conversation, tell it which store you want to work in, and tell it again if you want to switch part way through. This is a setting inside the conversation with your assistant, not something you change in the Spoks app.

Supported tools

These are the tools your AI assistant gains once you have connected Spoks MCP. They are not features of the Spoks app, and support cannot run them for you. The real power comes from combining them: a single request can look up a segment, preview its size, draft a campaign for it, and hand back an editor link.

Identity & store

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

whoami

Confirms which Spoks login the assistant is connected as and which store it is working in. It also reads the basic store context the assistant needs to draft correctly, such as the store's timezone.

Ask your assistant to confirm it is connected and which store it is working in.

get_settings

Reads your store's branding and content defaults so drafted content matches your look: colours, fonts, logo, footer, locale and the defaults your account already uses for sending.

Ask your assistant to match your brand colours and fonts before it drafts anything.

update_settings

Changes your store's settings. The first call only shows the warnings for the change and saves nothing; the change is applied once you confirm. Needs settings access in your Spoks account.

Ask your assistant to update a setting, read the warnings it shows you, then confirm.

get_links

Hands back links into the Spoks app for the things the MCP deliberately cannot do for you, such as turning a flow on or sending a campaign, so you can finish them yourself.

Ask your assistant for the link to open what it just drafted.

Campaigns

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

search_campaigns

Finds campaigns by status, channel or publish date, or searches your published campaigns by describing the tone or topic you want.

Ask your assistant to list your last ten published campaigns, or to find one with a warm welcome tone.

get_campaign

Opens a single campaign to show its content blocks and details.

Ask your assistant to open a campaign and show you the blocks inside it.

get_campaign_statistics

Reads the figures Spoks already recorded for campaigns you have sent: email and SMS recipients, clicks, attributed revenue and purchases. Your assistant reads what Spoks recorded; it does not calculate or refresh anything.

Ask your assistant to compare the clicks on three campaigns you have already sent.

draft_campaign

Creates a new draft campaign and returns a link to open it in the editor.

Ask your assistant to draft a spring sale campaign, or a welcome email for a new collection.

update_draft_campaign

Edits a draft: change the subject, rewrite content, or add, remove and reorder blocks. Also works on a campaign inside a flow that isn't live yet.

Ask your assistant to change the subject line on a draft, or to reorder the blocks so the image comes first.

update_draft_campaign_blocks

Edits specific blocks in a draft (fix a typo, swap an image, rewrite one paragraph) while leaving the rest of the content and styling untouched.

Ask your assistant to fix the typo in the second paragraph, or swap the hero image for a new product photo.

Flows

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

get_flows

Lists your automated flows with their name, whether they're live, and connected campaigns.

Ask your assistant to list your flows and say which ones are live.

get_flow

Opens a single flow to show all of its steps and details.

Ask your assistant to walk you through the steps in your welcome flow.

get_flow_blueprints

Lists all flow blueprints (welcome series, abandoned cart, win-back and more) with their trigger, timing and steps. Pick one to see the full content of every send step as a starting point for your own flow.

Ask your assistant to show you the abandoned cart blueprint before you build one.

create_flow

Creates a new flow with a name, trigger and re-enrollment settings. The flow starts inactive and empty.

Ask your assistant to set up a welcome flow for new subscribers.

update_flow

Changes an inactive flow's settings: rename it, switch the trigger, adjust who gets enrolled, change re-enrollment rules, or reorder the steps.

Ask your assistant to rename a flow, or to move the SMS step before the second email.

add_flow_step

Adds a step to a flow that isn't live yet. Send steps are created with a blank draft you fill in afterwards, and stay disabled until you turn them on in the editor.

Ask your assistant to add a two-day wait and then a reminder email.

update_flow_step

Changes the settings of a single step in a flow that isn't live yet: adjust a delay, tweak a filter, or disable a send step.

Ask your assistant to change the wait in step 2 from one day to three.

To edit a flow or a campaign within a flow, the flow must be paused with no contacts currently enrolled.

Contacts & segments

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

search_contacts

Searches your contacts by filters such as tags, activity and sign-up date, and returns a count and summary list.

Ask your assistant to find the contacts tagged VIP.

get_contact

Shows the full profile and recent activity for one contact, by email or ID. Personal details like addresses and notes are left out for privacy.

Ask your assistant to summarise one contact's recent activity.

get_segments

Lists your segments, each with its filter and current size, so you can see reach at a glance.

Ask your assistant to list your segments and how big each one is.

get_segment

Opens a single segment to show its filter, current size, and a few example contacts.

Ask your assistant to open one segment and show a few example contacts.

preview_segment

Tries out a filter without saving it, returning how many contacts match and a small sample.

Ask your assistant to preview a filter before you save it.

create_segment

Saves a new segment from a filter and returns its size and a link to open it.

Ask your assistant to save that filter as a segment called "Recent VIPs".

update_segment

Updates a segment's name, filter, description or emoji. If draft or scheduled campaigns already use it, Spoks warns you before applying the change.

Ask your assistant to broaden the VIP segment to contacts active in the last 180 days.

Forms & media

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

search_forms

Finds your signup forms and polls, with their status and submission counts, to reference in content.

Ask your assistant to find your active signup forms.

search_media

Searches your media library for images and videos to use in content.

Ask your assistant to find the logo image in your library.

upload_media

Adds images to your media library by URL (up to 10 at a time) so you can use them in content.

Ask your assistant to upload an image by URL and name it "summer-hero".

Ecommerce

Tool

What it does

What to ask your assistant

products_search

Searches the products in your connected Shopify store, returning real titles, prices and images to feature.

Ask your assistant to feature your three newest products in a draft.

discounts_search

Searches your discounts, returning codes, amounts, usage limits and validity windows.

Ask your assistant to pull an active discount code into a draft.

Things to try once you are connected

These are things to say to your own AI assistant after connecting Spoks MCP. They will not work anywhere else.

Campaign drafting

  • Ask it to draft a campaign announcing your spring collection.

  • Ask it to match your brand voice and rewrite the intro on an existing draft. It reads your settings, then updates a single block.

  • Ask it to reorder the blocks so the image comes first.

  • Ask it to draft a launch email for your three newest products with a specific discount code. It looks up the products and the discount, then drafts with real prices and images.

Audience & segments

  • Ask it to preview an audience of contacts tagged VIP and active in the last 90 days, without saving it.

  • Ask it to save that filter as a segment called "Recent VIPs".

  • Ask it to build a segment of customers who bought twice but not in the last 90 days, and to tell you how many that is.

Results

  • Ask it to pull the recorded figures for the campaigns you sent last week.

  • Ask it which of those campaigns has the most attributed revenue against it, and what its click rate was.

Flows

  • Ask it which flows you have and whether any are live.

  • Ask it to edit the second step of your welcome flow. The flow must be paused first.

  • Ask it what kinds of flows it can set up, to see the available blueprints.

  • Ask it to set up a win-back flow for customers who have not ordered in 90 days, email first and SMS three days later. It creates the flow from the blueprint, adds the steps and delays, and drafts each send for you to review.

  • Ask it to fix the typo in the headline of the first email, leaving the rest untouched.

Ecommerce

  • Ask it to draft a campaign featuring your three newest products, using real product details.

  • Ask it to list your active discount codes.

Rate limits

Spoks MCP applies a single rate limit per user, shared across all tools:

Limit

Scope

Applies to

20 requests / 60 seconds

Per user

All tools (shared)

This limit applies only to MCP requests. If you reach it, you'll see a message telling you how many seconds to wait. Pausing for that window and spreading requests out keeps you under the limit. Normal back-and-forth in a chat rarely gets close.

Security best practices

How access works, and what the connection can reach.

Authentication

Spoks MCP uses OAuth authentication, meaning:

  • You log in with your Spoks credentials.

  • You don't need to manage API keys.

  • Access is determined by your Spoks permissions.

Approval flows

Read and write tools are labeled properly so you can manage which tools to auto approve and which should need manual approval before usage.

Data access

  • Spoks MCP works only within stores you belong to, with the same access your Spoks account already has.

  • Contact personal data is treated as sensitive: addresses and notes are left out of contact results, and the tools are geared toward aggregate answers rather than listing individuals.
