How do I add personalization like first name in an email?

How to insert first name and other personalization tokens in campaigns and flows, including a fallback when a contact has no first name.

Written by David Isak Hansen

Personalization tokens are placeholders that Spoks replaces with real contact data when a campaign or flow email is sent. The most common one is the contact's first name, so a greeting can read "Hi Sarah" instead of a generic hello.

Add a first-name token in the email body

Personalization is its own block.

  1. Open the campaign or the flow email in the editor.

  2. In the content area, click the + button to open the block picker.

  3. Under the Text section, select Personalization.

  4. Browse the token groups and select First name (or another contact field).

If the contact has no first name, set a fallback so the greeting still reads well — for example Valued Customer. The inserted token looks like {{firstName||Valued Customer}}.

Add a token to the subject line or preview text

  1. Click Review in the top right.

  2. In the subject or preview field, click the {} button to open the token picker.

  3. Select the token you want.

If you don't see Personalization

  • You are inside a text block. Click outside it, then use + to add a Personalization block.

  • You can also type the token directly, including a fallback: {{firstName||Valued Customer}}.
